Officer Jeremy Bitner laid to rest

Police Officer Jeremy Bitner was struck and killed by a drunk driver while making a traffic stop on May 28, 2012.

Eight-year-old Oliver Orton stood at attention just after 3:30 p.m. Friday, saluting the passing funeral procession of fallen Englewood police officer and Army veteran Jeremy Bitner. Dressed in his Cub Scout uniform and clutching a tiny American flag outside of Fort Logan National Cemetery, Oliver was one of many scouts and community members lining Sheridan Street to honor Bitner, 39, who was struck and killed by an allegedly drunken driver early Monday,  5/28/2012. Bitner was talking to Kevin Montoya during a traffic stop a little after midnight when 20 year-old Conner Donohue sideswiped Bitner’s police car, hit Bitner and Montoya and then drove off. Montoya survived but Bitner died shortly after, leaving behind a wife, Christina, and two children, ages 9 and 7.

Thanks to Mike Gallagher for his commitment to recognize the sacrifice of our police officers and especially by giving this police officer and hero the recognition he deserves. This young police officer, Jeremy Bitner, served his country twice; first in the US Army and after fulfilling that obligation, continued to serve the citizens of his community as a dedicated police officer in Englewood, Colorado. Jeremy was tragically killed by a drunk driver (the first Englewood police officer to die in the line of duty), leaving behind a wife and two children. He was admired by all of us, and especially by those who knew him well and will be forever remembered. Say a prayer for his family and for the men and women of the Englewood Police Department who not only lost a dedicated and talented young officer, but who also lost a cherished friend.
